Charles and Ray Eames‘s The Eames Walnut Stool

The Eames Walnut Stool (1960) was originally designed for the lobby and executive suites of the Time-Life Building at Rockefeller Center in New York City. Ray took the lead on design, drawing on her sculpture training. Working with blocks of solid walnut, the Eameses used a lathe to sculpt pleasing profiles, similarly to how one would be used to make turned legs for chairs and tables. After experimenting with several ideas, the duo chose three shapes for the Time-Life lobby to accompany the Eames Executive Chair and large murals by Josef Albers and Fritz Glarner. Crafting each for use as a table or seat – finding just the right curve for the top was crucial to its success – the Eameses were so fond of the design that they used it throughout their Pacific Palisades home.
